Development of iOS and Android mobile applications to support waste management and the jarecikliram.hr website

Before the realization of this project of creating a mobile application for Android and iOS, we were presented with scarce requirements in literally a few sentences, so that the project was mostly carried out at our own discretion. Although there were fears about the client’s reaction to such a result, satisfaction with the delivered system was mutual.

Web pages are made for informational purposes with the addition of adaptations for visually impaired people. The websites themselves contain information about the project, waste management tips, news and publications, and contact information. The City of Jastrebarsko has the ability to independently create and publish news and publications through a management system (CMS) and manage other website content, so maintenance on our part is not necessary. News are in the form of a blog, and publications can be audio content or .pdf content.

Mobile application

Through the mobile application, which is informative and educational, users are enabled to;

review the waste collection schedule
view the locations of recycling yards or green islands on the interactive map
register your email address to receive notifications about the municipal waste collection schedule
report damage to green islands or improperly thrown waste through the mobile application itself by sending a photo and your current geo-location
and finally there is a fun Memory game in which you have to find pairs of types of waste and the bins in which that type of waste is disposed of

What does the Ja Recikliram project actually include?

Two connected pieces. There is a public website (jarecikliram.hr) for the City of Jastrebarsko with project info, waste management tips, news and publications, plus native iOS and Android apps that show the collection schedule, a map of recycling yards and green islands, notification sign-up, a damage and waste reporting tool, and a Memory game about sorting waste.

How do residents report illegally dumped waste or a damaged green island?

Straight from the app. They snap a photo, the app attaches their current GPS location, and the report goes through. That way the city gets the picture and the exact spot at once, instead of a vague phone call where nobody is sure which container is broken.

Can the City of Jastrebarsko update the website without calling us every time?

Yes. We built a CMS into the site, so the city publishes news and publications and edits other content on its own. News works like a blog, and publications can be audio files or PDFs. Because of that, the site does not need maintenance from our side.

Are the apps native to iOS and Android, or one shared codebase?

One shared codebase. We built them with Flutter, which means iOS and Android come from the same source while still installing as proper native apps from the App Store and Google Play. It keeps the two versions in sync and cuts the cost of maintaining each platform separately.

We came to you with almost no spec. Is that a problem?

It was not here. The brief for this project was a few sentences, so we shaped most of the system ourselves. We had some nerves about how the client would react, but the result landed well on both sides. If you only have a rough idea, we are comfortable filling in the detail and showing you options as we go.

Is the website accessible for visually impaired users?

Yes, that was part of the build. The site includes adaptations for visually impaired visitors, and publications can be offered as audio content, not just PDFs, so the information is reachable for people who cannot rely on reading the screen.
